Telephone calls to a legislator during sessions are usually handled by staff people. If you need your legislator’s phone number, you can call the House Information Office at (651) 296-2146 or 1-800-657-3550.
- Very often your legislator will not be able to talk to you directly when you call the first time. (Try to remember how many meetings and hearing your legislator must attend.) You will most likely need to leave a message. Leave your name and phone number. He or she will call you back as soon as possible.
- If you are calling about a specific piece of legislation:
- Know the number and status of the bill you are referring to. If you don’t know the number or the status of a bill, call House Index at (651) 296-6646 or 1-800-657-3550.
- Tell the staff person who answers, who you are, how you feel about the issue, and supply any other information requested.
- Phone calls by a large number of people on the same issue may have an impact on how your legislator decides to vote on that particular issue.
- It is often advantageous to have a telephone tree in place for families to get in touch with legislators to express their concern for issues that affect a program.
